Rebecca's Ponderings

A dear friend and I got together early this month to catch up and discuss life while enjoying some seasonal coffee. Opportunities like that are much too few and this was long overdue. We see each other every week and converse via text, email, and facebook almost daily. Yet we still need that occasional one-to-one conversation, without all the background noise of life, to discuss those deeper questions and concerns that only a sister in Christ can understand.

As we talked, we discovered that both of us have been struggling to grow spiritually. We read the Bible and we prayed every day. We earnestly desired to grow in the Lord, but there seemed to be some unseen hurdle that kept us from drawing closer to God. We considered working through a Bible study together, but scheduling was an impossible task.  It had taken us half the year just to get together for coffee.  We parted encouraged that we were not alone, and with an agreement to pray for each other.

Later that week, we decided to pray together every evening for nine minutes at nine pm. Praying together, even without being together in person, would make us accountable to each other in the same way that workout partners or jogging buddies encourage each other to do more than they ever would, or could, alone. Moreover, when we unite together in prayer, the Holy Spirit moves through us in incredible, unexplainable ways.

I mentioned the idea to the middle school girls I get to share life with each week. I knew they were struggling to learn to pray and to be faithful in prayer, also. They got excited about praying 9 at 9.  In order to communicate the idea more effectively, we established a blog and invited a few people to join us.

I have no idea where this will lead. I only know that it has rejuvenated my personal prayer life. I had already decided to make 2010 a year of prayer so this is just an early step in that direction. I am excited to see how the Lord moves and works this year.

  1. That’s a great idea! We had a study at one point at our church which was called “9” and was a starter study using roughly 9 minutes of time. Obviously, you hope it grows over time, but it was a very beginner type of thing.

    I love 9 minutes at 9:00 to pray! 🙂
